Cormorant in the water
Note the string around the cormorant's neck. It is a piece of dried rice grass tied just tight enough so the bird can't swallow a large fish. If he catches a large fish, he gives it to the boatman, as you'll see. Then he gets a small fish that he can swallow as a reward.
